Air Compressor 101: Will my compressor run on a generator?

Generator for Air Compressor

The compressor should be able to run given the proper requirements, however we recommend not using a compressor with a generator as a long term solution. Generators have fluctuations in power, and because a compressor needs constant voltage to be able to run, it is generally best not to use a generator if no power is available.

Additionally, the size size generator you would need to run the air compressor would probably exceed you capabilities. For example, a 1 HP air compressor with a type L motor draws 10 amps at 120 volts or 1200 watts. 1200 watts x 6 = 7200 watts. A 7200 watt generator is required to run this compressor. Now extrapolate that to a 100 HP air compressor.

If electricity is not available, and you need compressed air for your facility, it would make more economic sense to rent or buy a gasoline powered air compressor.
